Crypto Adoption in Developing Countries: Overcoming Barriers and Driving Financial Inclusion

Posted on August 23, 2023August 23, 2023 By Mmadu Abuchi

In a world grappling with very real economic challenges and uncertainties, the potential of cryptocurrencies to foster some sort of financial inclusion and empowerment for those in developing countries has become a shinning light at the end of the tunnel. Some of these nations, often burdened by corruption, meddling powers or exploitation, and a lack of access to traditional financial services, naturally face an uphill battle in achieving economic stability and progress. Against this backdrop, cryptocurrencies have emerged as a promising solution, offering a lifeline to those who have long been excluded from the benefits of a somewhat fair financial system. So, in this article, we are going to embark on a journey through the landscape of crypto adoption in developing countries, taking a meaningful look at the barriers they face and the inspiring success stories that highlight the transformative impact of cryptocurrencies in times of economic adversity.

Challenges on the Path to Adoption:

Corruption: Corruption has affected cryptocurrencies on two fronts. One of them has been the acts of fraudulent crypto projects and exchanges like FTX for example and the other from governments and regulatory bodies, which, in some cases purposefully create uncertain and unfavourable conditions for crypto-related activities, stifling growth and innovation. These actions undermine cryptocurrency adoption by eroding trust in digital financial systems, deterring individuals and businesses from participating due to concerns about transparency and security.

Regulatory Uncertainty: Ambiguous or restrictive regulations create an uncertain environment for both users and businesses. Without clear guidelines, individuals and organizations may hesitate to engage in crypto-related activities.

Financial literacy: As cryptocurrencies are a relatively new field of technology, it is only natural that most individuals struggle to grasp the concepts and inner workings of cryptocurrencies. This and the mere fact that the crypto space can be a little technical and overwhelming have probably turned some individuals away, which is one of the reasons behind our dedication to demystifying the blockchain and its applications.

Volatility Concerns: We have all heard the stories of people who unfortunately lost more than they could bear investing in the cryptocurrency market, unfortunately, cryptocurrency price volatility has often served as a deterrent to potential users from adopting digital assets, especially in situations where they might be seeking stability for everyday transactions and savings.

Cryptocurrencies as Agents of Change:

Financial Inclusion: Cryptocurrencies offer an avenue for those without access to traditional banking services to participate in the global economy. With just a smartphone and internet connection, individuals can engage in financial activities, send and receive remittances, and even access loans without relying on brick-and-mortar institutions and some of their extortionate practices.

Remittances Revolution: Developing countries in some cases depend on remittances from family members working abroad. Traditional remittance services charge high fees and take copious amounts of time to process transactions. With cryptocurrencies, individuals have access to quicker and more cost-effective ways to send and receive money across borders.

Access to Capital: Blockchain technology enables peer-to-peer lending and crowdfunding platforms, giving entrepreneurs in developing nations access to capital that was previously out of reach. This democratization of finance empowers local businesses to grow and create jobs.

Secure Property Rights: Blockchain’s transparent and immutable nature can be leveraged to establish secure property ownership records. In countries where property rights are uncertain, blockchain-based land registries may soon offer a reliable solution.

Success Stories:

Venezuela’s Bitcoin Adoption: In the face of hyperinflation and economic turmoil, Venezuelans turned to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin as a store of value and means of accessing international markets. Local communities organized crypto meetups and workshops to educate and support each other, and the crypto community has created a minor escape from the hyperinflated economy.

Kenya’s M-Pesa and Beyond: While not a cryptocurrency, Kenya’s mobile money service M-Pesa paved the way for digital financial services in Africa. Peer-to-peer platforms like Paxful and BitPesa (now known as Binance P2P) further facilitated crypto adoption in the region.

Philippines’ Remittance Revolution: The Philippines, known for its large overseas workforce, embraced cryptocurrencies for cross-border remittances. The collaboration between crypto exchanges and local financial institutions has streamlined remittance processes, reducing costs and time delays.

Nigeria’s Crypto Entrepreneurship: Nigeria boasts a vibrant crypto ecosystem, one of the biggest among developing countries, where young entrepreneurs harness blockchain technology to solve local challenges. Platforms like Flutterwave, Kraken, Kucoin and BuyCoins enable Nigerians to trade, invest, and access financial services.

The adoption of cryptocurrencies in developing countries holds the promise of bridging financial divides and fostering economic empowerment. Overcoming challenges such as infrastructure limitations and regulatory uncertainty requires collaborative efforts between governments, businesses, and communities. As the success stories from various corners of the globe illustrate, cryptocurrencies have the potential to uplift societies by providing easily accessible financial services, reducing transaction costs, and promoting innovation. As awareness grows and the benefits become more evident, the path toward a more inclusive and interconnected global economy becomes increasingly illuminated through the transformative power of cryptocurrencies.
